Abbie Cardwell

Hailed in Melbourne, Australia, as the Belle of Rootsy-Rockabilly-Twang Abbie Cardwell has defined her own edge and sound that is part yesteryear and very now.

Playing banjo, guitar, ukulele and harmonica Abbie naturally writes songs that pay homage to the genres of her influences.

Be it blues, folk, soulful country, or rockabilly Abbie “shows mastery of any style, vindicating her title as ‘The Belle of Rootsy-Rockabilly-Twang” (dB Mag) and has naturally attracted a string of songwriting awards to her collection of independently released albums.

In 2005 Abbie attended the BMI USA songwriting conference held in Hawaii and to her delight walked away as the winner. The judges were unanimously singing her praises. Producer Russ Titleman (Rickie Lee Jones, James Taylor) stated “Abbie is fabulous!”, producer David Tickle (Sting, Prince, Rolling Stones) said “I’m shocked! where did she come from? she’s amazing, really amazing. There’s a real freshness about her. She’s a great entertainer!”and hit songwriter and American Idol judge
Kara Dioguardi said “I love her. She has a totally individual vibe & her performance was excellent”.

Abbie has performed with her band The Leading Men (featuring her brother Jeb Cardwell on dobro) extensively at major festivals and venues around Australia and overseas and supported hero’s such as Steve Earle and Tony Joe White five times!

The Bare Bones Session is Cardwells’ latest released on her own record label Rootsytoons Records (Distributed thru Vitamin). It is a “brazen & beautifully honest” live album that was recorded just as music was made in the ‘good old days’; live and without ANY editing or stopping! recorded over 2 days in a Melbourne studio and mixed in the USA by producer Nick Didia (Bruce Springsteen).

Don’t be fooled into thinking this is all there is to Abbie either as her ever thirsty desire to discover new sounds and evolve has led her to learn Spanish just so she can get her mouth around singing the language of love. Her curious desire has evolved into the creation of her side project 10 piece Mexican band Abbie Cardwell and the Chicano Rockers.

Driven by inspiration alone Abbie also headed to Mexico on her own to record with local Mexican band Twin Tones just for “fun”!

Abbie is a passionate life-student of the craft of songwriting and ever willing to get her hands on new instruments to learn and inspire new sounds.

This vintage loving belle possesses such wide appeal with an evergrowing and steady following of all ages. From Triple J to ABC Radio National. From rumbling Hot Rod festivals to clubs and folk festivals Abbie dissolves age and genre specific barriers with natural ease.
