OPENING NIGHT!
Wow, The Greenroom was full to capacity.  The meal was great and the free champers (complete with a strawberry) went down a treat.  The highlight of the evening was Shane Charles, Yorta Yorta man who gave us an entertaining and highly educational didgeridoo performance.  I hope to see a lot more of Shane in these parts so we can learn and understand indigenous culture to help us work toward true reconciliation.  John Sheill’s Jelly Boy story captivated the audience and left us hanging for the punch line on closing night.  (It was worth waiting for). Dean Blaich, talented local musician was exemplary and entertained us for the rest of the evening once official proceedings were complete.  There was friendly community spirit and anticipation of the events to come and this was a perfect start to the festival. Thanks to the Matt Greenaway for his hospitality.

Saturday

CARTOONING WORKSHOP
All advertised sessions were fully booked and extras were added.  Wendy Hien treated children of all ages to an hour of fun and skill development and the quality of work was amazing.  There were dragons and damsels, Simpsons and Simbads, dogs and cats, elephants and evil characters, fairies and frogs! All for just $2.00 per person.

YOUTH AND CHILDREN’S ART SHOW
Showcasing art work from Emerald Primary School and Emerald Secondary College, the quality of work was incredible across the board.  The talent of students and Art teachers at these two schools was obvious.  The display was skillfully selected by Art Teachers Jill Edwards and Marjoliene Marnock and put together by Jill with volunteer curator Kim Noack who worked until around midnight on Friday night to present the work with stunning results.

PAVE UNDERAGE
Kicking off with a guitar workshop, electric and bass guitars were ringing out when these talented musicians got together with John Downing for an all in jam.  Learning two new songs in an hour and a half, the boys sounded as if they had been playing together for years!

This was followed by many of the same guitarists being exposed to talents of the legendary jazz and blues great, Bob Sedergreen.  Complimented by Mal Sedergreen on Sax, Bob on Keyboards and the beautiful vocal tones of 16 year old Jane Blair, the group learnt the skills of jazz and blues improvisation.   As a spectator, I could see the progress these young adults made, starting at varying stages of understanding and ability and in just over an hour, ending with a performance that could have been produced by an experienced and cohesive band, rather than a group of kids working together for such a short time.  It may be years before the participants will realise the learning or confidence they gained in those few hours.

The dance party that followed gave 13-17 year olds a chance to let their hair down and relax.  Steve Punch had a great mix of dance music and the Emerald Mechanics Hall was bouncing with the beat.  Lighting and Sound was kindly provided by Emlyn Lucas of Yo Mamma Music.  The event was fully supervised, smoke, drug and alcohol free and all who attended had a great time.  We hope the underage events can continue to give the youth of Emerald and district a regular diary entry and an accessible, safe, fun place to go.

LIVE MUSIC
The selection was vast but the few we managed to get to get to see were BOSSA RELIEF at Suitably Mellow and Gus Ryberg Amphitheatre, INDIGO RYE, RILEY JORDAN & CRES, DEAN BLAICH, CAROL McCOY with CRES and LEIGH SLOGGETT at The Greenroom, SKA VENDORS at Elevation.  These artists were all of the highest standard and we will certainly be keeping an eye out for their future gigs.

POET’S BREAKFAST
It was suggested that Poet’s and Breakfasts don’t necessarily go well together but these Lyricists were in fine form.  The bacon and egg sandwiches, pancakes and coffee were top class as was the poetry.  Everything from bush ballads, to deep thinking, soul searching beauty, it was a wonderful way to start the day. Brought to us by Woorilla, the Poet’s breakfast was a feast worth getting up early for.

SKA VENDORS at ELEVATION
Emerald was jumping to the sounds of a fine horn section, lively percussion and rhythmic guitar and keys.  All led by Steven Montgomery, on vocals and dance duty!  If there was anyone among the crowd that stayed seated, I didn’t notice but young and not so young were up there on the dance floor.  For $5.00 an adult and kids free, this was a great value afternoon.  A great workout and unsurpassed fun.  Look out for this band for a breath of fresh air.

THE GREAT WALL OF ART
I don’t think that stretch of fence ever looked better, even when it was a thriving plant nursery.  In recent times it has been a messy eyesore but the contemporary art by Trevor Anthony and other local artists turned it into a sight to behold.  The weather was a problem.  Originally planned for the previously day and changed at the last minute due to the weather forecast, the folks at the bureau have a lot to answer for!  In spite of the plastic sheets coming on and off all day, those brave enough to walk the length of the hessian covered cyclone wire, would have been rewarded for their efforts.

FOOD RELATED MEMOIRS
I went along to this out of curiosity but came away to write my memoirs using food to start the creative juices flowing.  Maria Miller’s thought provoking questioning and prompting dug up memories long buried.  The fresh raspberries picked and eaten from my grandmother’s suburban back yard.  The chickens and ducks she killed, prepared and cooked for the family at Christmas.  Going to the Chinese restaurant in the 60’s with our saucepans to take away the chicken chow mien, fried rice and home made dim sum.  The smell of the curries that Dad taught Mum to cook and the fluffy cheese and onion omelettes and home made chips every Sunday night for dinner.  I was inspired enough not only to make notes of my memories but to make some chicken stock, a batch of soup, a chicken curry, risotto, biscuits and cakes over the next couple of days.  Beats the quick and easy food trap it is so easy to get into when you are working and busy.

LOVE LETTERS
I’ve lived in Emerald for almost a quarter of a century and I’m ashamed to say that I have never been to the Gemco Theatre before Anzac Day, 2006!  After the stunning performance by Carol McCoy and Ron Kamoen I will definitely be heading back soon.  The actors showed real emotion and it was hard not to get caught up in their stories.

Wednesday

ARTS TRIVIA AT ELEVATION
The food was great (try the salted calamari on a bed of rocket), the Sauvignon Blanc was cold and crisp and the company was a lot of fun.  The trivia was challenging but not too high brow, so even novices like me could contribute.  The quiz was well constructed and kept moving all night and our host was ‘tough but fair’ and turned a few blind eyes to the ‘lifelines’ and ‘phone a friends’.  It came down to the final round and it was neck and neck.  Our table was pipped at the post by one point to the Farrow table.  Great prizes (First prize was a DVD Player, Second an Elevation Voucher!) – just topped off a fun filled night that cost no more than the food and drink.

ACRYLICS DEMONSTRATION BY JOHN DUDLEY and OPEN DAY AT EMERALD ARTS SOCIETY
I haven’t been to the Arts Society rooms for more than 20 years when I did a short course there soon after moving to Emerald.  A quick glance around the studio demonstrates some of the talent that exists among the members.  One of those talented members, John Dudley, was kind enough to demonstrate his skill.  In just over an hour, he turned a blank canvas into a photograph, showing light and shade, depth and colour in just the right proportions.  His art was complimented by his wonderful humour and banter as he shared his gift of wit alongside his other art.

Friday

EMERALD IDLE GRANDFINAL

After three gruelling weeks of finals competitions between dancers, singers and theatrical performers, it was down to four talented individuals to sort out just who was the most idle person in Emerald. With spirits high, the jovial audience voted in their favourite act, with Peter Garratt (of Macclesfield) taking out the $500 prize money. A fun night full of that patented Idol suspence.
